Despite all these agreements and concessions, Christopher Columbus died without being rich, he acquired many rights and privileges, but without collecting a fortune, as might be expected. That is why their children had to wage an endless legal struggle to realize these inheritance rights derived from these capitulations and recover some of them that were later annulled, known as Colombian quarrels. The capitulation of Santa Fe was an agreement between Christopher Columbus and the Catholic Monarchs. Signed in Santa Fé more than 500 years ago. Although the preparation of the documents actually took more than 3 months, the originals were not preserved. The first copy dates from 1493. The documents are located at the Archivo de la Corona de Aragón. Also in Barcelona and Seville at the Real del Archivo General de Indias. The word capitulations means agreements or treaties. Especially between kings and civilians. Monarchs also became dubious, but a group of influential courtiers convinced them that they would lose little if the project failed and would gain a lot if it succeeded. Among these advisers were the Archbishop of Toledo Hernando de Talavera, the notary Luis de Santángel and the running mate Juan Cabrero.
Royal Secretary Juan II Coloma was ordered to formulate the capitulations. The preparation of the agreement took three months, as the monarchs dealt with other issues. The capitulations were sealed in the Santa Fe camp, which had been erected as a military base during the siege of the city on the outskirts of Granada.
